Chinese restaurant chain Shaxian Delicacies, which is famous for its wide variety of snack food from around the country, opened its first Japan branch in Tokyo earlier this month. The store reportedly made 200,000 yen (about 11,950 yuan) in just five hours after its opening.
As the global appetite for street food continues to expand, so does the popularity of Chinese delicacies. The often cheap and quick snacks that locals take for granted are also what foreigners savor. Whether you’re in China or not, to truly experience Chinese food culture, start with a street snack.
Jianbing or Chinese Crepe
Mr. Bing’s is one of the first Jianbing stands in New York City, serving the delicacy with an American twist. Its owner, Brian Goldberg, studied Mandarin in China years ago. He ate Jianbing for breakfast when he lived in Beijing. Goldberg loved it so much, he brought it to America.
When CGTN Digital spoke with Goldberg recently, he shared some of the company’s long-term goals. “We are not ready to expand beyond New York yet; still have a lot of work to do here,” he said. “There are a few Chinese street food items to add to our menu. We’re looking at the candy apples on a stick, sheng jian bao and Beijing drinking yogurt – nai lao.”
Rouga Mo or Chinese Hamburger
Serving snacks from northwest China’s Xi’an like Rouga Mo and Liang Pi, which translates to “cold-skin noodles,” Xi’an Famous Foods in NYC has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a tiny, family-owned shop in the basement of Golden Shopping Mall in Flushing to a popular Chinese culinary attraction.
The restaurant has flourished thanks to the late TV celebrity Anthony Bourdain and his positive comments 11 years ago. After learning Bourdain committed suicide on June 8, CEO Jason Wang posted on Facebook to express his condolences, and later donated all his chain restaurants' net sales (about 73,509 US dollars) on that day to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Braised Chicken or Clay Pot Chicken
In September 2017, Yang's Braised Chicken Rice landed in the US, choosing Tustin, California, as its location. At Yang’s, there’s only one item on the menu: braised chicken with ginger, mushrooms and chilies, served in a clay pot with rice. Customers can choose from three levels of spiciness depending on their palate. Since the first restaurant opened in Jinan, east China’s Shandong Province, in 2011, the chain has opened more than 6,000 stores in China, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and the US.
Reganmian or Hot-dry Noodles
Reganmian, or hot-dry noodles, is a traditional dish of central China’s Wuhan City. It is the most popular breakfast food in Wuhan, often sold in street carts and restaurants in residential areas. Fresh noodles are cooked in boiling water. Sesame oil is mixed in and the noodles are boiled again before toppings, including sesame paste, pickles, chili oil, spring onions and handmade sauce, are added. Thanks to a couple who opened a restaurant in Florence, Italy, serving the dish, Reganmian has become so popular that many Italians have started to turn up at the restaurant and ask for it.
Lanzhou Hand-pulled Beef Noodles
With a history of about 200 years, Lanzhou hand-pulled beef noodles consist of a flavorful, clear broth, shaved beef, tender radish slices and chewy handmade noodles. The noodles have received a warm response from customers in the US, Japan, Canada and Australia. Last August, after a year of study in China's northwestern city of Lanzhou, Japanese chef Seino Takeru opened a restaurant in Tokyo. His diner has been so successful that customers have to wait in line to get a table every day.
Cantonese Dim Sum

A Chinese street food market being staged for the sixth year from May to August in Hungary’s capital Budapest, has eight food stands that serve a variety of authentic Chinese foods including everything from dim sum to Chinese barbecue and Chinese pastries. Organizers said it is an annual tradition that Chinese food fans in the region look forward to
In London’s Soho area, Chinese street food and dim sum are filling the plates at Baozi Inn. The West End restaurant serves up authentic northern Chinese street food. They sell everything from crispy oyster mushrooms to chicken skewers and fried homemade squid balls.
Henry Zhang(from US)
“I like kao chuan (Chinese barbecue). I like it because it goes well with a cold bottle of Yanjing beer. ”
Xuyen Nguyen (from US)
“I think Jianbing is a nice snack. The crunch is what makes it good. A friend of mine was in a town and compared it to a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme (without the meat).”
Josh McNally(from UK)
“I am a big fan of Jianbing and Reganmian but I don't like Rouga mo, which tastes too dry to me. After an evening shift, I regularly get kao leng mian or simply a tub of rice. ”
John Goodrich(from UK)
“I like Jianbing but it’s too hot to eat it in summer. Egg tart and chilled mango sago cream with pomelo are my favorites. ”
