近日，多家美国媒体报道，一位华裔富豪“捐赠”650万美元送女儿进入斯坦福读书。由于这笔7位数的“天价捐献”是迄今为止此次招生舞弊案中涉案金额最高的，这位华裔富豪及其女儿备受媒体关注。

美媒：涉案女生履历造假被开除

据悉，涉案女生是步长集团董事长赵涛的女儿赵雨思，在2017年被美国名校斯坦福录取。

据《纽约时报》报道，知情人士表示，赵家人通过摩根士丹利的财务顾问Michael Wu的推荐，认识本案关键人物、升学顾问辛格。摩根士丹利发言人称，Wu因不配合内部调查已被解雇，该公司正在与相关部门合作。

The person with knowledge of the inquiry said that Ms. Zhao’s family was introduced to the college consultant, William Singer, by a financial adviser at Morgan Stanley based in Pasadena, named Michael Wu. A spokeswoman for Morgan Stanley said that Mr. Wu had been terminated for not cooperating with an internal investigation into the matter and that the firm was cooperating with the authorities.

在今年3月的法庭听证会上，招生舞弊案的首席检察官Eric S. Rosen表示，辛格曾试图让赵雨思被斯坦福的帆船队录取，并为她制造了虚假的帆船运动简历。

At a court hearing in March, the lead prosecutor in the admissions case, Eric S. Rosen, said that Mr. Singer had tried to get Ms. Zhao …… recruited to the Stanford sailing team and created a false profile of her supposed sailing achievements.

虽然赵雨思最终没有被（帆船队）录取，但据Rosen称，辛格给赵雨思伪造的这些证书的确对她进入斯坦福起到了部分作用。在赵雨思入学后，辛格向斯坦福帆船项目捐赠了50万美元。

She was ultimately not recruited, but Mr. Rosen said that she was admitted to Stanford partly on the basis of those false credentials and that, after her admission, Mr. Singer made a $500,000 donation to the Stanford sailing program.

赵雨思已被开除，因为该校发现她的申请中包含伪造的帆船证书，并向该校帆船项目支付50万美元的费用。

Yusi was expelled after the University discovered that her application contained falsified sailing credentials linked to a $500,000 payment to the University’s sailing program.

据相关消息人士表示，3月30日，赵雨思已经搬离她在学校的住处，4月2日，学校正式宣布她被开除。

She moved out of her on-campus residence on March 30, according to sources familiar with the matter — three days before the University announced the expulsion in a press release on April 2.

英媒：赵雨思通过正常渠道录取

但据英国媒体《每日邮报》报道，此案出现奇怪的转折，赵雨思实际上并未被该校帆船队录取，而是凭借自己的努力被斯坦福录取。

In a bizarre twist, however, the young woman gained admission on her own, and was never actually recruited by the sailing coach at the school.

法官在该案件的听证会上表示，2017年年底，辛格将一名申请人（即赵雨思）介绍给斯坦福的帆船教练约翰·范德莫尔（John Vandemoer）。作为运动员招募的一部分，辛格伪造了一份帆船运动履历，使申请人看起来像真正的帆船运动员。

'In late 2017, Singer brought an applicant to John Vandemoer. As part of the athlete recruiting process, Singer created a falsified sailing athletic profile to make it appear that this applicant was a real sailor,' said the judge during that hearing.

'Although [Vandemoer] did not help this candidate's application in any material way, this candidate was ultimately accepted to Stanford partly due to the fact that she had fabricated sailing credentials.'

据报道，范德莫尔共收到三位学生的报酬，另外两名学生决定就读其他高校，而第三名女生并不需要他的帮助即可被该校录取。

Vandemoer received payments in relation to three prospective students, but two decided to attend other schools and this third young woman didn't need his help to get into the school.

赵家回应：赵雨思是案件受害者

事件发酵后，《洛杉矶时报》最先报道了赵母代理律师Vincent Law发表的一份声明，辛格“只提供教育咨询服务，并不保证可以进入某所特定的学校”。声明还称，赵雨思非常优秀，当时已经获得了美国几所高校的录取通知。

Singer “only provided educational advisory services, and did not guarantee admission into any particular school,” the statement said, adding that Yusi Zhao was a strong student and received admission offers from several unnamed colleges in the U.S.

声明称，在赵雨思被斯坦福录取后，辛格要求赵母通过他自己运营的基金会向学校捐款。辛格说，这笔钱将用于学校的奖学金，因此赵母提供了650万美元的捐款。

When the woman’s daughter was admitted to Stanford, Singer asked her to make a donation to the school through a foundation he operated, according to the statement. Singer allegedly told the woman that the money would, among other things, help fund scholarships, so she made the $6.5-million contribution, the statement said.

No one in the family has been charged in the scandal and it’s unclear how much the parents or their daughter knew about steps Singer was taking to secure the girl a spot at the university.

然而，斯坦福大学回应称，在媒体报道之前，该校并不知道这笔支付给辛格650万美元捐款，也没有从辛格或任何与他相关的家庭处收到过这笔钱。

Stanford said it wasn't aware of the $6.5 million payment to Singer until it was reported by the media and did not receive that amount of money from Singer or from the family working with the consultant.
