No way, lived in Shanghai for 3 years, It is just too far for India at the moment. Of politics and black money come to a minimised state then there is a good chance of us catching up with them

It sure can but in dreams. Instead of making comparisons we need to work out own way to make Mumbai beautiful. A lot discipline is required and the civic authorities need to do their job well. The sad part of Mumbai is that so many people are living in the city are not from Mumbai itself. I have lived over 45 years I this city and I have seen it turn from a lovely city to a concrete jungle. Hope the upcoming metros and coastal roads and the new airport at Navi Mumbai will help to decongest this city.

Not Mumbai, but other city is gonna be built which will be comparable to Shanghai or Tokyo or London or New York.
Modi government signed deal with Singapore. Singapore has taken the project of building an highly developed Indian city almost 10 times larger than Singapore
Not just this but India would be having 100 smart cities too but modi should win for all this to happen.

I have been to Mumbai ,Shanghai , London and Tokyo so I believe I am eligible to answer this question.
the answer is BIG NOOOO!!
There are many reasons behind that
Not Mumbai but any other city in india which is underdeveloped can be made as Shanghai or like other big cities if it is planned.
And even if Mumbai become like Shanghai or London I bet you can not change the people in the Mumbai..So eventually people will be the same and hence the same.
There are mindset of people in those big cities that they have to follow rules about everything in the city.About Cleanliness, tourism , Maintaining rules
But if we plan from now still there is huge scope to make Mumbai even more great city..

In Short No Because
1- what i believe is how good & neat the character of family or family head is so Good & Neat will be the House so it same goes for the city so clean & United the citizens so clean and good will be the city also.
2- from my birth i have been in Mumbai & its 22 years what i have seen is people in Mumbai just care for them & interest only in earning money let how the place will be they will stay there they will never care for standard of living but will care for making money.
3- we say Mumbai is one of the top developed city but more than 80% of the people are still under poverty and we expect new york or Shanghai type city from them.

4- the Government & municipal have build & developed many things but the Politics game in it has made the quality a vary low quality.
5 - we expect for a clean and broad road without traffic but at the same time we have to take care of the people who make their earning in Footpath business because if they are tried to remove from there it become politics or human rights but those footpath sellers people never care about the city cleanliness and taxes.

7 - before some days the railway introduced Tejas Express from Mumbai to goa with High Advanced facilities but when it returned from its trip the news about it told us how great our people are.

Shanghai shares a lot of traits with Mumbai. Both cities were started their modern journeys as subjects of the British Empire. Both are their respective country’s largest cities and financial capitals. Both are located on the sea and have had great, maritime pasts and their country’s cultural influence.
Besides all this though, nothing between the two is common.

What to say of Shanghai, even Delhi, Mumbai's great northern rival in India, has stolen a march over the city. With India’s best subway system and a competent BRTS system in place, Delhi has its own back to pat. NCR has more GDP now as compare to MMR region. Even southern rival cities marching to this. You can compare infrastructure as compare to Bengaluru.
To be fair to Mumbai, it is not as if the city is not trying. It definitely is, but its efforts are too far and few between.it need alot to be done. We need to do more and more to compete with world class cities.

Again Each city is unique in itself, as are its problems. And hence, the solutions have to be novel too. As such, the ‘Shanghai Model’ cannot be replicated in Mumbai. The city will have to find its own unique model, its own answers to its infrastructural problems. That, most importantly, would require a concerted and coordinated effort from government, bureaucracy, developers, activists and citizens.

The city’s dynamic and resourceful nature mean that Mumbai can achieve, once it has set its heart to a task. We just have to give it some more time. We need proper governance and action.

but as you know, whole china support shanghai to develop. shanghai is the window of china(government says that).

shanghai CANNOT represent CHINA. because there are still lots of poor area in china.

Because its commercial capital of India like how Shanghai is that of China.
Shanghai is largest metro of China and Mumbai is largest metro of India.
Shanghai and Mumbai both are ports.
There are many such similarities and hence Mumbai is compared to China.
Talking about skyscrapers Mumbai has many high rise towers(highest no of high rises in the country) unlike Delhi.
Mumbai will soon have a 442m tall skyscraper.

Shanghai is impossible to emulate because of its history. Many people talk of mumbai becoming shanghai through building more roads and skyscrapers but majority of Shanghai extends from its historical importance of where West met East.

Could it- Yes
Would it- Doubt it. As a nation we are much more West-focused, nae? (read New York, Shivaji statue=Statue of Liberty)
Should it- Hell no! Mumbai shouldn't emulate any other city at all (definitely, not blindly). The dynamics of the city are completely different- Population density, culture, history, climate, per capita income, etc. etc.
Ideally, you would retain your soul and evolve in the right direction, leveraging best practices from your global comparables

Shanghai is much more advanced than Mumbai in terms of infrastructure, management, transport. You will definitely feel the change in living standards.However speaking Chinese will make your life easy there.There are also some downsides like traffic and pollution.

Shanghai will be a much more "international city" than Mumbai, as an expat you will meet people not only from China but from every country around the world.

Both cities have large population and lot of immigrants. In numbers, Shanghai and Mumbai have almost same population but Mumbai's area is 438 sq. km. whereas Shanghai is spread over an area of 6,340 sq. km. So density of population in Mumbai is much much higher than that of Shanghai.
