Japan has the most well diversified economy and their companies are world class. Japan is a leading country in science research, sports, cultural exports and military. South Korea nowadays is achieving similar levels of success of Japan. Well both Singapore and Israel are very controversial countries. Some ppl will hate it some ppl will like it. But they are smaller countries with smaller population. They have so many societal and geographical challenges with fierce competition from the rest of Asia. Yet, they are so well managed. And Israel continues to grow as a high tech-starting hub & Singapore continues to become a regional hub for finance and tech.

@Less Cringey Mapper Dude also Singapore was not like NYC - Singapore started in 1965 with a GDP of <$900 million, now it has a GDP of $300 billion. The city-state has grown immensely in the past 5 decades or so compared to NYC, which was rich from the start.

@Ron Franklin Singapore's prosperity depends on the bulk of foreign trade growth across Asia and the Middle East. After all, the port of the Strait of Malacca is there, and Malacca is a transit point between most countries.

@PreNix Smaller also means having less resources. If smaller is an advantage,why there isn't even a single city in ur country can be so rich? Regardless of the tremendous resources ur country has provided. Also America and China r also big,why their GDP per capita are higher than ur country?

- "why does china and america have higher gdp per capita than indonesia" they had more time to develop, china is old and america was already independent since 17th century. Indonesia was a colony and had a ruthless dictator (suharto) then had an economic crisis in 1998.

@PreNix First the gdp per capita of Jakarta is 19000usd instead of 34000,from ur official statistics. And that's because Indo only has this single big city and thus rich ppl concentrate there. If u look the average salary u will understand.
Second china is old but they were poorer than even India in 1990. Your theory isn't valid.
Singapore is success because they work harder than anyone else, except Korea Japan and China. And their gov is more effective and less corrupted. Making excuse can't make ur country great but will only obstruct ur country's development.
