Dear NTU Class of 2020,
We are writing today to let you know that, after consultation with our stakeholders, the University has made the difficult decision to postpone the in-person Convocation and PhD Hooding ceremonies for the Class of 2020, originally scheduled from 21 to 29 July 2020.
These important events will be held at an appropriate time in the future, hopefully in early 2021, when it becomes feasible for us to hold large gatherings without the continuing public health threat posed by COVID-19. Protecting the health, safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff and guests is our top priority.
We find ourselves in uncharted territory in planning for something as special as Convocation under the present circumstances. The Convocation is a major milestone in your lives, and each of you certainly deserves a meaningful celebration that honours your hard work and accomplishments at NTU.
Ahead of the in-person convocation tentatively targeted for early next year, the University will, therefore, also conduct a Virtual Celebration to mark this important milestone for the Class of 2020 on 18 July 2020 (Saturday) at 10:30 am Singapore time. We will inform you via your NTU email account, and the University’s website and official NTUsg social media channels, when details of this celebration event are finalised.
The past few months have been challenging for all of us. Since January, you have experienced disruptions: postponement or cancellation of events, the shift to online learning, and restrictions on how you spent your final weeks of the semester on campus with your friends. But with courage and confidence, you have adapted swiftly to these necessary changes in your NTU education journey despite the disruptions caused by the global pandemic.
We are grateful to all our students, faculty and staff for your resilience and support as we adjust to this “new normal” during these unprecedented times. Each of you has risen to the challenge of this moment, and you inspire us with hope for our future.
Sincerely,
Subra Suresh
President
Ling San
Deputy President and Provost
