Then you have private sector security, not official. Often these will be ex-military from other countries, but mostly triads.

China has it’s fair share of gang and organization issues. You’ll almost rarely hear about as they don’t like to get public involved. It’s quite a private ordeal. There are triads in China. There are even Japanese Yakuza factions in China.

A large amount of the power struggle in politics and higher end business in China Mainland and Hong Kong is often involved with underground organizations, such as triads.

I’ve been to meetings in China where I’ve been patted down multiples times by armed security before meeting with the big bosses. I’ve been to meetings where we’ve been generally shot at. So getting shot as a foreigner is plausible, but extremely rare to happen in China. It depends on what you are involved in. And the average foreigner going to China, isn’t going to be on that side of the life.

Money in China is very sought out. Banks always use armed security to empty/fill the vaults.

You may think that China is as uncivilized as the United States, with benighted people practicing “open carry,” toting their guns along to such dangerous places as supermarkets or barbecues. But no, China has good gun control, so you are safe from guns. You may get hit by a car if you aren’t nimble when you cross a street, but you won’t get shot.

Taiwan also has strict gun control, so only criminals have guns. Because of the penalties for illegal firearms, criminals only shoot other criminals, so it works out pretty well. Even that is very rare. I cannot think of a single place in Taiwan that you would be in danger of getting hassled, day or night, unless you were going out of your way to make trouble. Again, keep your eyes peeled as you cross the street.

You do have to watch out for random violence in bar areas, or anywhere groups of insecure young men are drinking, rich or poor. It can escalate easily. Sexual assault is often a potential issue for women, with white women being prominent victims, the more so because it’s not openly addressed. But in the end, actual danger is fairly rare, you just have to be wary because it can be extremely sudden and random, and it’s easy to let your guard down because criminal assault does seem quite rare, and news of it isn’t usually publicly reported unless/until it goes viral on social media.
