UNNC celebrates 10-year PhD Anniversary

23 September: UNNC celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its PhD education. Students, staff and partners gathered in the D.H. Lawrence Auditorium to attend the ceremony.

Vice Provost for Research, Professor Patrick Y.K. Chau, delivered a lecture entitled “How to prepare yourself to be a good PhD Student”, during which he suggested: “Do what you are interested in and develop yourself to be interested in what you do.”

Over the past 10 years, UNNC has cultivated 165 graduates with a 100% post-graduation employment rate. More than 90% have continued teaching and doing research at universities and institutes worldwide, with some employed by top universities such as the National University of Singapore, University of Cambridge and Tsinghua University.

“Graduates serve as UNNC ambassador,” commented Professor Alain Chong, Dean of Graduate School. “By publishing in top journals and winning international awards, they are promoting and building on the reputation of our University in various areas around the world.”

During his speech, Professor Chong spoke of the development of the University’s PhD education over the past decade and introduced UNNC’s unremitting attempts in doctoral education.

The International Doctoral Innovation Centre (IDIC) - a pioneering doctoral training centre founded in 2012 - is one example. Integrating inputs from UNNC, the University of Nottingham as well as local Ningbo government, it offers students a much broader view and practical experience tackling local technical obstacles. Moreover, it has established close contact with over 40 large enterprises around the world and well-known Ningbo firms including Microsoft Research Asia, NVIDIA and NINGBO ZHOUSHAN PORT.

Besides, the Graduate School, together with faculties, innovatively initiated the Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) in 2017. By establishing connections with reputed institutions, DTPs provides students with bilateral professional guidance and abundant shared resources.

When speaking of the future, UNNC Provost Nick Miles summarised that the University would continue to invest in education and the student experience, but “with a greater focus on doctoral education and research that has meaningful impact here in China as well as all around the world.”

Earlier this year, the University of Nottingham signed a framework agreement with the Ningbo municipal government to establish the Beacons of Excellence Innovation Institute at UNNC.

Professor Miles commented that UNNC would extend “Beacons” research to Ningbo, therefore cultivating high-level talents in green energy and chemicals, healthcare and intelligent manufacturing.
