I've been living in Singapore for some years as a student from China.

I feel happy and comfortable, although my study is quite stressful. People are generally nice and professional. I often share my experience here proudly with friends living elsewhere in the world. When my friends got robbed in France, I said to them Singapore is super safe and I quote the words local police used to warn people: "Low crime does not mean no crime". When my friends complain about bad airport experiences, I strongly encourage them to visit the Changi airport to see what’s the best of the best.

Here are just some personal experiences I want to share with you.

The nice ladies in the International Student Centre of NTU greeted me by calling my name when I stepped into the centre looking for their help since my first visit. They actually recognize me and remember my name. I feel very respected because I’m not just another stranger holding a metric ID with a unique metric number. And, they really make serious efforts to help international students. Their kind and professional attitude makes me never afraid of asking stupid questions as a newbie.

Due to my personal health conditions, I’ve been treated in the National University Hospital. I still visit my doctor there regularly. All the medical services I’ve enjoyed in NUH are way over my expectations. The nurses understood that I’m a foreign student so that I am very likely not familiar with the medical and insurance services. They help me to contact my university and the insurance company to make sure that my costs are properly covered. They explained every detail about my examinations, treatments, medications, and things I need to pay attention to in daily life in TWO languages. My doctor speaks English which I understand fine with some difficulties because of my limited vocabulary on medicines. There is always one or two Chinese nurses explaining the doctor’s words in Chinese when they saw my puzzling face. In NUH, I know I’m in good hands and I feel less stressful although I have health problems.

I only have a few local friends because few locals are pursing the same degree as mine. We often have some interesting talks about what China looks like in reality. They are curious about China. Most importantly, they have open minds regarding of sensitive issues which impressed me deeply.

China and Chinese have controversial reputations overseas which I’ve been experienced for years. There are words against Chinese which makes me feel disappointed circulating in the Internet in Singapore. But those are not keeping me away from appreciating the beauty of Singapore and Singaporeans.

Last but not least, the AIR is super clean for most of the time when neighbouring countries behave. It’s amazing to live so close to forests in an urban city. Jogging in forests at weekends is a privilege that most Chinese living in major cities in China don’t have no matter how much money they make. It takes hard work to make a city a beautiful garden. Singapore has done it. I feel privileged to live here. I will miss Singapore in the future.
